1.  The following instructions make a pattern for a front cover      of a large note pad.      Lay the note pad even with a corner and side of a piece of      cardstock. While applying downward pressure to the note      pad, run the pen along side of the pad.  We are using a      5" x 7" scratch pad in our example.
2.  Carefully bring the note pad up onto its bound side and      place it down again onto its opposite side.
3.  While applying downward pressure to the note pad,      continue tracing the outer edge to the end of the paper.
4.  Cut it out and note it is the "Front Cover" along with the      size/type of note pad the pattern is for. For reference,      you need about 2 1/2  inches of cardstock beyond the      bound edge of the notepad.  Excess cardstock beyond      that can be removed from the pattern.
5.  For the back cover of the note pad, lay the note pad even      with a corner and side of another piece of cardstock.   While      applying downward pressure to the note pad trace both      the outer and bottom edges to complete the pattern.
6.  Cut it out and note it is the "Back Cover" along with the      size/type of note pad the pattern is for. 7.  Optional:  If you want the resulting note pad cover      to have a decorative edge, cut the pattern 1/8" to 1/4"      beyond the drawn line as allowance for deco scissor      cutting.
This two-piece cover method is handy for any size note  pad when you want the front cover to be a different type  of paper, such as vellum.  Vellum can be used to create  a stunning cover with a neutral cardstock being used to  complete the back.
